New motor vehicle sales, February 2026

There were 124,004 new motor vehicles sold in Canada in February, decreasing 0.9% from February 2025. In dollar terms, sales remained relatively stable, decreasing less than 0.1% in February 2026 compared with one year earlier. Over the same period, sales of new passenger cars fell by 3.8%, while sales of new trucks (-0.5%) saw a smaller decline.

On February 16, 2026, the federal government launched the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, providing incentives of up to $5,000 for battery electric vehicles and $2,500 for plug-in hybrid vehicles to support emissions reduction. In the same month, 12,626 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were sold, an increase of 47.2% from one year earlier. New ZEVs comprised 10.2% of total new motor vehicles sold, compared with 6.9% in February 2025.

  Note to readers

The term "zero-emission vehicle" (ZEV) refers to any motor vehicle that has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions. The ZEV category includes battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
