The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) released the following statistical data for February 2026 on March 31, 2026.

## Housing Starts (February 2026)

In February 2026, housing starts in Japan showed a year-on-year decline.

- **Total Housing Starts:** 57,630 units
- **Year-on-Year Change:** -4.9%
- **Previous Month Change:** -0.4%

The -4.87% decrease (rounded to -4.9%) in volume of new housing construction started represents a continued softening in the residential construction sector compared to the previous month's -0.4% decline.

## Construction Orders Received (February 2026)

Construction orders received by 50 major constructors showed significant growth in February 2026.

- **Year-on-Year Change:** 42.7%
- **Previous Month Change:** 5.7%

The value of original contracts and construction for own use (excluding subcontracted orders) surged by 42.7% year-on-year, a substantial acceleration from the 5.7% growth recorded in the previous month.
