# GDP up by 0.1% in both the euro area and the EU

**Preliminary flash estimate for the first quarter of 2026**

## Overview

In the first quarter of 2026, seasonally adjusted GDP increased by **0.1%** in both the euro area and the EU, compared with the previous quarter, according to a preliminary flash estimate published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In the fourth quarter of 2025, GDP had increased by 0.2% in both areas.

Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, seasonally adjusted GDP increased by **0.8%** in the euro area and by **1.0%** in the EU in the first quarter of 2026, after +1.3% in the euro area and +1.4% in the EU in the previous quarter.

## Source & Methodology

- **Source datasets:** `namq_10_gdp` (quarterly national accounts)
- **Methodology:** European quarterly national accounts compiled in accordance with ESA 2010 (European System of Accounts 2010). Growth rates based on chain-linked volumes. Flash estimates published after ~30 days (preliminary) and ~45 days (updated).
- **Coverage:** This preliminary flash estimate is based on data from 19 Member States, covering 96% of euro area GDP and 94% of EU GDP.
- **Geographical note:** As of 1 January 2026, euro area (EA21) includes Bulgaria; releases from Q1 2026 onwards comment on EA21 series.
