# FLASH CONSUMER CONFIDENCE INDICATOR FOR THE EU AND EURO AREA

In April 2026, DG ECFIN’s flash estimate¹ of the consumer confidence indicator² continued its free fall since the start of the Iran war in both the EU (-4.0 percentage points (pps) compared to March) and the euro area (-4.2 pps).³ At -19.4 (EU) and -20.6 (euro area) points, consumer confidence scores significantly below its long-term average, reaching its lowest level since the turn of 2022/23.

¹ This month's Flash CCI is computed on the basis of consumer survey data from all 27 EU countries and all 21 euro-area members.

² The consumer confidence indicator builds on replies to selected questions addressed to consumers according to the Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys. **Data collection period:** April 1-21.

**Release policy of the Consumer Confidence Indicator (CCI):** Every month, the Directorate-General Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN) of the European Commission releases the flash CCI for the EU and euro-area aggregates, using the data available on the cut-off date. The final Consumer Survey results are then published as part of the full Business and Consumer Survey release at the end of the month.

The Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys is managed by DG ECFIN's Unit Economic situation, forecasts, business and consumer surveys (A3), Sector Business and consumer surveys and short-term forecast.
